MSK practice requires important ‘foundation’ skills in differential diagnosis, treatment planning, knowing when to request imaging and who to refer on.  

In this course we provide essential background knowledge to improve the ability of new and recent graduates to: 

  1. identify and appropriately action red flags
  2. perform and interpret subjective and objective examination findings
  3. make a differential diagnosis for specific pathology 
  4. identify ‘yellow flags’ and modifiers of treatment response 
  5. link assessment findings to interventions to create an appropriate treatment plan for the individual.  

As well as clinical reasoning we cover important professional, ethical and communication competencies including: 

  • Person-centered care

  • Safety and precautions
    Improving efficiency of the clinical examination

After this course you will be able to:

  • Identify red flag indicators of potentially serious pathology and discuss referral prioritisation and pathways.

  • Interpret your subjective and objective examination findings to reach an appropriate differential diagnosis of specific pathologies.

  • Develop and prioritise a safe and appropriate treatment plan based on clinical examination findings, psychosocial modifiers and patient preferences.

  • List indications for imaging and discuss safety issues relating to follow-up of results.

  • Discuss indications for onward medical or orthopaedic referral.

Dr Angela Cadogan

Physiotherapy Specialist (Musculoskeletal).

Angela is a NZ registered Physiotherapy Specialist (Musculoskeletal) with a Ph.D in Musculoskeletal Diagnostics from AUT University, Auckland, New Zealand (2012) (shoulder sub-specialty). Based in Christchurch, she works as a clinical consultant in her own private practice specialising in the diagnosis and management of shoulder pain.

Angela also works in an Orthopaedic Triage and Assessment role (Shoulder Service) with the Canterbury District Health Board. Angela has an ongoing research interest in shoulder conditions, has many publications on the topic, has been an invited keynote speaker at many national and international shoulder conferences and is Associate Editor at JOSPT (Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy).

Angela has been teaching courses on the diagnosis, management and rehabilitation of shoulder conditions for over 10 years and is passionate about upskilling other physiotherapists and improving capability of the physiotherapy workforce to meet the needs of the changing healthcare system.
