About the Course


In this course you will learn how to make an accurate diagnosis, confidently refer for imaging or injections and apply effective rehabilitation for common shoulder conditions. 


Who is the course suitable for?

Ideal for MSK the physiotherapist who wants to update on the latest in evidence-based diagnosis and management of common shoulder conditions and improve their rehabilitation skills for frozen shoulder, rotator cuff-related pain and shoulder instability. Also suitable for:

  • anyone working in shoulder ECP, ICP or other health pathways.
  • those working towards advanced practitioner registration.
  • anyone working in an advanced practitioner role or wanting to work in a shoulder triage role.  


Course Content

Online learning includes 4 hours of self-paced learning covering the 'essential' background knowledge and evidence for frozen shoulder, rotator cuff-related pain and traumatic shoulder instability including:

  • epidemiology
  • pathoaetiology
  • natural history
  • differential diagnosis
  • imaging indications
  • non-surgical management (including corticosteroid injections and orthopaedic referral criteria) 
  • physiotherapy rehabilitation


Online modules are presented in short micro-learning modules to fit in with your busy life. Stop, start and pick up where you left off or complete them in your cancellation slots or lunch-break at work. 

After this course you will be able to:

  • Use clinical reasoning to make a differential diagnosis of specific shoulder conditions.

  • Perform an accurate and efficient physical examination using key tests to idenfity stiff, unstable and rotator cuff conditions.

  • Develop an evidence-informed treatment and rehabilitation plan for frozen shoulder, unstable shoulder and rotator cuff conditions.

  • Understand and refer for appropriate imaging investigations for specific shoulder conditions, clinically correlate the results and appropriately communicate results to the patient.

  • Understand the role of corticosteroid injections, how to involve the patient in shared decision-making, refer for and appropriately follow-up after an injection.

  • Identify patients who may need onward referral and appropriate referral pathways.

Physiotherapy Specialist (Musculoskeletal).

Angela is a NZ registered Physiotherapy Specialist (Musculoskeletal) with a Ph.D in Musculoskeletal Diagnostics from AUT University, Auckland, New Zealand (2012) (shoulder sub-specialty). Based in Christchurch, she works as a clinical consultant in her own private practice specialising in the diagnosis and management of shoulder pain.

Angela also works in an Orthopaedic Triage and Assessment role (Shoulder Service) with the Canterbury District Health Board. Angela has an ongoing research interest in shoulder conditions, has many publications on the topic, has been an invited keynote speaker at many national and international shoulder conferences and is Associate Editor at JOSPT (Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy).

Angela has been teaching courses on the diagnosis, management and rehabilitation of shoulder conditions for over 10 years and is passionate about upskilling other physiotherapists and improving capability of the physiotherapy workforce to meet the needs of the changing healthcare system.
