In this follow-up episode of Glenohumeral Gurus, host Dr Margie Olds welcomes back Dr Angela Cadogan to delve deeper into the imaging and treatment options for sternoclavicular (SC) joint issues. Dr Cadogan, a registered specialist physiotherapist from New Zealand, shares her expertise on the complexities of diagnosing and managing SC joint problems.
Key Takeaways
Imaging Challenges: X-rays and ultrasounds have limited utility for SC joint assessment. CT scans are preferred for evaluating traumatic injuries and dislocations, while MRI is used for soft tissue and mediastinal structure examination.
Treatment Approaches: Management strategies vary based on whether the joint is stiff (e.g., osteoarthritis) or unstable. Treatment may include pain management, postural correction, and addressing muscle imbalances.
Multifaceted Assessment: Dr Cadogan emphasizes the importance of considering cervical spine posture, muscle length (particularly sternocleidomastoid), and scapular function when assessing SC joint issues.
Symptom Modification: Using a systematic approach to identify which interventions (e.g., chin retraction, thoracic extension) provide the most significant symptom relief can guide treatment priorities.
Dr Cadogan's practical advice on assessment techniques, imaging considerations, and treatment strategies provides listeners with a comprehensive approach to managing these complex cases.
Whether you're an experienced practitioner or a new clinician, this episode promises to enhance your understanding of SC joint management and equip you with new tools to improve patient outcomes.
Tune in for an enlightening discussion that could transform your approach to treating sternoclavicular joint issues!
