Why is Pharmacology Important for Physiotherapists?

New advanced practice opportunities are rapidly emerging for Physiotherapists in primary and secondary care. Although prescribing is not within general scope of practice in most countries, an understanding of the use, effects and clinical implications of commonly used medications is important in all areas of physiotherapy practice, including advanced practice roles.

About this course:

The course approaches the topic from a systems perspective that will be familiar to physiotherapists. We make it understandable, applicable and even (at times) fun!

What you will learn:

  1. The relevance and impact of medications on physiotherapy practice
  2. Principles of pharmacology
  3. Effects including potential adverse effects of common medications
  4. How to integrate physiotherapy practice with medication timing and dosages
  5. How to dialogue with medical colleagues appropriately

The course covers common medications including:

  • Beta blockers and hypertension medications
  • Analgesics and opioids
  • Antidepressants and antipsychotics
  • Glucocorticoids and NSAIDs
  • Bone density medications
  • Rheumatologic medications
  • Anti-clotting and cholesterol medications
  • Mucolytics and expectorants
  • Oral contraceptives and HRT
  • Immune system and cancer drugs
  • Alcohol, stimulants, cannabinoid and ‘club’ drugs

This online distance-learning program is delivered in 10 modules using audiovisual presentations, supported by external web links, downloadable quick reference sheets and a 250-page handout that you can keep for your future reference.

Who is this course suitable for?

The course is delivered by Dr Jack Miller as part of Advanced Practice training for physiotherapists in Canada but is open to and suitable for physiotherapists of all levels practicing in all areas of the health care system who want to understand more about commonly used medications.
