Shoulder Screening Module Overview

In this module you will learn how to systematically work through a process of screening the patient for red flags, other causes of shoulder pain, obtaining appropriate diagnostic imaging, and then classifying shoulder pain into categories that guide management. 

- All lessons are also available individually.

Red Flags

You will learn to screen for red flag indicators of potentially serious pathology and refer the patient for necessary evaluation within an appropriate time-frame.

Health Screening

You will learn current health guidelines for alcohol, tobacco and physical activity, and how to screen for risk factors and atypical symptoms and signs of medical conditions that may present with shoulder symptoms.

Pain and Psychosocial Modifiers

In this lesson you will learn the pathoaetiology and features of various pain states, including the mechanisms behind persistent pain. You will learn how to screen for and manage psychosocial factors and learn about their relationship to persistent pain.

Cervical Spine and Neurological Examination

In this lesson you will learn about the difference between somatic and radicular pain and how to examine the cervical spine to identify local, or referred pain. You will learn the diagnostic features of cervical radiculopathy, how to perform an accurate and thorough neurological examination.

Shoulder Imaging

In this lesson you will learn about the strengths and limitations of imaging modalities, indications for imaging, prevalence of imaged pathology and how to read and interpret basic shoulder x-ray views.

Diagnostic Classification of Shoulder Conditions

This lesson defines “diagnosis”, highlights the importance of the diagnostic process, provides a brief overview of diagnostic accuracy and presents a clinical classification system for shoulder conditions that forms the basis of the modules in the “Diagnosis and Non-Surgical Management” Course.

 

After completing all modules the Shoulder Screening Module, you can join our "Shoulder Screening" Facebook Group to keep up to date with the latest evidence in these areas. Those completing all modules in this course are also invited to join the online forum for this course to ask any questions you may have from the learning material, or discuss patient cases.

Physiotherapy Specialist (Musculoskeletal).

Angela is a NZ registered Physiotherapy Specialist (Musculoskeletal) with a Ph.D in Musculoskeletal Diagnostics from AUT University, Auckland, New Zealand (2012) (shoulder sub-specialty). Based in Christchurch, she works as a clinical consultant in her own private practice specialising in the diagnosis and management of shoulder pain.

Angela also works in an Orthopaedic Triage and Assessment role (Shoulder Service) with the Canterbury District Health Board. Angela has an ongoing research interest in shoulder conditions, has many publications on the topic, has been an invited keynote speaker at many national and international shoulder conferences and is Associate Editor at JOSPT (Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy).

Angela has been teaching courses on the diagnosis, management and rehabilitation of shoulder conditions for over 10 years and is passionate about upskilling other physiotherapists and improving capability of the physiotherapy workforce to meet the needs of the changing healthcare system.
