Identifying the type of pain, mechanisms contributing to persistent pain and the influence of psychosocial factors are critical in the diagnostic process, and in selection of appropriate treatment interventions.

  • Mechanisms of persistent pain, including central sensitisation.
  • Identification of psychosocial factors and management principles.

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Describe the key features of nociceptive, inflammatory, neuropathic pain and central sensitisation.

  • List the psychosocial modifiers of diagnosis and management and their relevant screening tools.
  • Understand criteria and pathways for referral of patients with significant psychosocial modifiers.
